Giants Disappear From Dons, Stays Put In Finals

The Greater Western Sydney has maintained its bid for the maiden finals berth with a 32 point unconvincing win over Essendon. Although the bombers had the highest possession percentage, had the best clearance and took more marks, the giants are the ones that won 14.9 (93)-8. 13 (61) on Sunday at the spotless stadium in front of 10,093 fans.

These results uplifted the GWS to the 10-8 win-loss statistic, half a game behind Geelong and   Adelaide in eight and tenth positions respectively, with only four matches remaining. Leon Cameron the GWS coach said it was amazing to see the side back on the winning track again and being able to secure four premiership points despite not gaming at their best level. The coach   told the reporters how pleasing it was to see the side winning points even when they are not playing at their best levels. He said that they are still in the hunt for the title.

Nevertheless, the victory may have come at a price with Tom Scully being substituted prematurely in the third term with what looked like a shoulder injury. Stephen Coniglio was felled by Essendon's Adam Cooney towards the end of the game, later on Adam Cooney was reported in this incident. Although Stephen was able to walk off the pitch, he had to be supported by trainers and you could see from a distance that he looked distressed.

It is the 20-minute burst that broke the match open and cleared the way for the giants to post a win over Essendon in what seemed to a historic victory. Toby Greene 31 touches and josh   Kelly’s 22 possessions were the best for the giants. Devon Smith, Jeremy Cameron and the substitute cam McCarthy also netted in two goals for the giants.

Despite the fact that the giants had plenty to play for, it was disappointing to see how they  struggled to find a way through the over determined Essendon outfit. From Devon’s free kick the match went goalless for close to half an hour.
